Tips For Independent Volunteering

If you’re already on the ground in the place you want to volunteer, but aren’t finding organized opportunities, you might think about arranging your own opportunity. I’ve found myself in this position more than once, and while I can’t say I’ve perfected it, I have at least amassed the following tips:

  • Be prepared to work very independently – come with a good plan for what you can do as well as how you can do it without relying much on other people having the free time to help and/or supervise you.
  • Be aware that in many contexts, things you are used to at home - like regular internet access, having the language ability and local know-how to sort out problems quickly, and even constant electricity - you may not be able to count on abroad.
  • Be flexible and willing to muck in where you’re needed; accept what staff members say they need or want or don’t need or don’t want. You may have some good ideas, but realize that you are the temporary help, and the staff will continue on after you go. Try to balance your desire to make a contribution with respect for their expertise.
  • Be prepared to use contacts – it’s absolutely amazing how much of a difference it can make when someone already knows you and knows you are “okay.” I personally think networking is absolutely fine and often works both ways – but I do try to be direct about it if that’s why I’m trying to meet with someone.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask for help, and certainly don’t do something you’re unsure of to avoid asking, but do make sure you’ve exhausted all the possibilities you can on your own first before turning to someone.
