From The Ecuatraveler: Tips On More Effective Volunteering

tri_logo.pngI was recently alerted to a useful post about volunteering which appeared on the Ecuatraveler (via the Tranquilo Traveler); it’s entitled “How to Actually ‘Make a Difference’ As A Volunteer”.

I think the tips are great and that they deserve a listing here, and not only a link to the site. I’ve added a few of my own comments (like this).

Before you volunteer:

1. Plan on volunteering as long as possible.
2. Learn the language. (See my thoughts on this here.)
3. Be knowledgeable about the region, the organization, and the work.
4. Get qualified.

During the volunteer period:

5. Take time to actively learn how the organization runs, and how things function in this part of the world
6. Get through the ‘Introductory Phase’ of your service as quickly as possible
7. Be a Leader. (I personally have mixed thoughts on this; stay tuned for more.)
8. Be Enthusiastic.

After you return:

9. Don’t forget your experience.
10. Talk about your volunteer experience with others.
11. Stay active. (Good one – and as an experienced volunteer in whatever capacity, you are most likely in a better position to do so than you would be without having volunteered. I think this may be the way in which many volunteers can make the most difference.)

Thanks for the Ecuatraveler for posting these tips; visit that site itself for more detail on each.
