Volunteer Placement Organization: Globalteer

By Kate | Permalink | No Comments | May 4th, 2007 | Trackback

Globalteer is a UK-based non-profit organization with four main projects into which it places volunteers:

  • Cambodia kids - volunteers can teach English, Japanese, sports or art, or assist orphanage staff in less structured activities with kids in Siem Reap.
  • Colombia kids: in Medellin, volunteers assist staff in a day care for street children, or, depending on their Spanish language ability, participate in outreach program.
  • Thailand animal rescue – a few hours south of Bangkok, volunteers feed animals, clean, and/or give guided tours of the center.
  • Thailand elephants project – volunteers can walk, feed and bathe domesticated elephants, alongside their professional handlers. All elephants were removed from bad conditions or otherwise exploitative circumstances.

Different placement lengths are possible; for the four-week program, fees range from $695 to $1347. The site includes a page explaining why people in general pay to volunteer and how fees for Globalteer programs are used. There’s also a page on responsible travel - advice on observing local customs, taking photos and encountering beggars - and some first-hand accounts from previous volunteers.
