logo.gifHabitat For Humanity mobilizes volunteers who’d like to put their time, energy and funds into building houses for people who need them throughout the US and the world.

What does HFH do?
“It is a non-denominational Christian charity dedicated to eliminating poverty housing worldwide” and it works in nearly 100 countries (see a map here) and over 3,000 communities worldwide. HFH has also built more than 200,000 homes, incorporating both volunteer sweat and tears as well as that of the eventual homeowner.

What does HFH not do?

HFH does not work as a relief agency. Recognizing that there are a number of other agencies that serve this need, and appreciating that long-term solutions are important as well and need remains long after the immediate aftermath of a disaster, HFH focuses its work on the later period.

How can volunteers get involved?
You can build for one to three weeks, as part of a group or individually (it seems it’s possible to volunteer individually only in the US or UK). Read the fact sheet to find out more. You don’t need construction or building experience, though it’s hard to imagine it doesn’t help. There are fees involved, but you can read about volunteers who have fundraised successfully here. Accommodation is arranged but will vary from project to project.
